And perhaps more importantly a perfect example of sustainability. It is stronger and softer than cotton, will last twice as long and will not mildew. An acre of hemp will produce as much fiber as 2 to 3 acres of cotton. Cotton grows only in moderate climates and requires more water than hemp, which is also frost tolerant and grows in all 50 states, including Alaska. Isn’t that amazing? While pesticides and herbicides are used in the production of other fibers, hemp requires none. It is truly a wonder fiber. This design uses eight patterns that are mirrored in a sequence from end to end. When I wanted to create a wrap and scarf that is truly reversible, I searched through my collection of over 200 reversible stitch patterns. Then selected a few that are equally beautiful on both sides. The result is 16 different stitches. For the yarn, I decided on two options: Basis, a blend of cotton, alpaca and cashmere; or Solo Lino, 80% recycled linen, 20% linen. Both are remarkable. Basis because its 75% cotton but you’re sure to believe it is entirely alpaca and cashmere. It does not feel, look or knit like a yarn that’s mostly cotton. The blended strand of alpaca and cashmere is wrapped in micro thin strands of cotton, which leave a glow of ultra-soft coziness. And Solo Lino because it doesn’t have the stiffness of linen yarn, instead its delightfully silky. This could be the softest, lightest scarf you will ever make. Designer Knitting Pattern When I first saw Ecopuno yarn in white I immediately thought of light, fluffy snow. Snowflakes melt in your hand and this yarn seems to do the same. I began to conceive snowflakes, large and small, fashioned from tiny eyelets. But I found all the options for creating eyelets disappointing. Needing them to be symmetrical, I created my own unique stitch. So, as you work this pattern, you’ll learn the new James’ Symmetrical Eyelet stitch. And you’ll discover that this blend of the softest cotton with merino and alpaca is remarkable. What makes it so remarkable is the fact that it is 75% cotton, but you’re sure to believe it is entirely merino and alpaca. It is like knitting with air, when the air is filled with delicate snowflakes.~James StitchSaver™ Row Checker “It is hard to make a mistake with our unique complimentary Row Checker. Our favorite sporty sweater has been re-imagined in delicious Basis fingering weight. The pairing of two variegated yarns that were meant to be united almost guarantees compliments when you finish this project. This fingering weight yarn is a very light and very special blend. It is mostly cool, soft cotton, that has been enhanced with a bit of wool to give it resilience. Plus, cashmere to add a luxurious glow. It provides clear stitch definition and has a delightful hand when knitting, because while being cotton based it knits like wool. And last but not least the color variegations include some subtle touches to elevate the sophistication of your finished work. The sleeves and body are knitted separately in stockinette, then sewn together to create a classic crewneck. Both the upper body and sleeves are worked flat from the top down to the bottom of the armhole. Then the lower body and sleeves are worked in the round from the armhole to the cuff and hem. Tackle this modern version of a classic sporty sweater and you’re sure to have a homerun. StitchSaver™ Row Checker “It is hard to make a mistake with our unique complimentary Row Checker. I’ve resisted yarns with polyester…until now. When I was introduced to Popcycle, HiKoo’s blend of 50% recycled plastic bottles and 50% bamboo, I was amazed. It is exceptionally soft with a wonderful hand, yet cool and extremely strong. It looks beautiful due to a subtle tweed effect that is the result of each fiber taking the color differently when dyed. But the best part is there are 2 plastic bottles in each hank of yarn. A study in 2016 showed that Americans consumed 50 billion plastic bottles and only recycled 23%. Just one million plastic bottles recycled saves 250 barrels of oil and eliminates 180 metric tons of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere. So, knitting with this sturdy, soft, cool, beautiful fingering weight yarn feels good in more ways than one.
